Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is often called the "bad” cholesterol. But it has a purpose. In LDL-cholesterol, the LDL (lipoprotein) helps carry the essential cholesterol needed in your cells via your blood. However, excess LDL-cholesterol in your bloodstream clogs your arteries and can cause heart disease. So, a lower LDL-cholesterol level is better.
